Getting Accepted

Alright, so back in December ‘23 I heard about the SANS Work-study program. Long story short, if you are selected you are able to go help run the event in exchange for a discounted SANS course and GIAC exam voucher. It was a new experience for me as I’ve never been to a conference for my career before and this was the closing thing to it. I applied for multiple courses and was selected for SANS FOR 500 | GCFE.
If you know me, then you know I’m currently a Red Team Operator so while I am happy to be a part of the work-study program, I was hoping to be able to attend something within my specialization. Nonetheless I am honored to be able to do this and it seems like it will be a great time.

SANSFIRE 2024

The event was a 6-day affair for the facilitators that volunteered for the work-study. But I met some really awesome people, they came from all over the place. Would you have guessed we would have volunteers from California or Georgia? What about someone from Germany? I’m local so it was like a 45-minute drive, but some people took 8-hour flights to do this. Crazy.
The work done was nothing taxing or exhausting we helped setup displays & lanyard. Once that was done, we made sure the reception desk was good to go and then started checking all of the rooms to ensure they would be ready for the week. Afterwards we talked about what is expected from a facilitator and then we setup the rest of the event. (I don’t want to go to in depth about that just in case)

SANS FOR 500

I think I will give the course its own entry, but I did want to mention that my fellow students complained that I wasn’t talking enough about the content of a course I never attended. I thought that was funny so the next day I explained I haven’t taken the course either, I was just there in case there were physical issues.
